The basics: mais and menos + adjective + do que

To compare two things, use:

• mais + adjective + do que = more … than
• menos + adjective + do que = less … than

These are perfect for everyday comparisons.

Examples:

• Este café é mais barato do que aquele. (This coffee is cheaper than that one.)
• O ônibus é menos rápido do que o metrô. (The bus is less fast than the subway.)
• O meu carro é mais caro do que o seu. (My car is more expensive than yours.)

Notice “do que” connects the two things you’re comparing. Think of it like “than.”

Equality: tão … quanto (or como)

To say two things are equal in quality, use:

• tão + adjective/adverb + quanto (or como) = as … as

Examples:

• O filme é tão bom quanto o livro. (The movie is as good as the book.)
• Ela corre tão rápido quanto o irmão. (She runs as fast as her brother.)
• A praia aqui é tão bonita quanto a de lá. (The beach here is as beautiful as the one there.)

Quanto and como both mean “as” here; quanto is very common and works great in everyday speech.

Compare quantities: tanto … quanto

When comparing quantities (nouns), use tanto (singular) or tantos/tantas (plural) + noun + quanto.

• Eu bebo tanto café quanto chá. (I drink as much coffee as tea.)
• Eles têm tantos livros quanto nós. (They have as many books as we do.)
• Ela come tanta fruta quanto o irmão. (She eats as much fruit as her brother.)

Irregular (better words!)

Some common comparatives don’t use mais/menos:

• bom → melhor (better)
• mau → pior (worse)
• grande → maior (bigger/older)
• pequeno → menor (smaller/younger)

Examples:

• Este celular é melhor do que aquele. (This phone is better than that one.)
• O serviço hoje está pior do que ontem. (Service today is worse than yesterday.)
• O apartamento novo é maior do que o antigo. (The new apartment is bigger than the old one.)
• Minha irmã é mais nova do que eu. / Meu irmão é mais velho do que eu. (Younger/older are often “mais novo/mais velho” for age.)

Este bolo é mais bom do que aquele. → Este bolo é melhor do que aquele. Use melhor (better), not “mais bom.” A casa é mais grande que o apartamento. → A casa é maior do que o apartamento. Grande → maior is the natural comparative. Pago mais do que 20 euros. → Pago mais de 20 euros. Before numbers, use mais/menos + de.
