Culture and etiquette notes

  • Transport cards (교통카드): Tap when you board buses and subways; on buses, also tap when you get off to calculate distance. Ask: “충전 어디에서 해요?” (Where can I recharge?)—Answer: 편의점 (convenience stores) or stations.
  • Priority seats (노약자석): Leave them for elderly, pregnant, or disabled passengers.
  • Quiet and food: Keep phone calls short and quiet; avoid eating on buses and subways.
  • Honorific for drivers: Say 기사님 to address bus or taxi drivers politely.
  • Bus stop buttons: Press the stop button (벨) before your stop; don’t shout. “다음 정류장에서 내려요.” is a clear phrase.
