Mini-dialogue: Ask and understand
Listen for simple steps. You can confirm with "D’accord" (Okay) or "Merci !" (Thanks!).
Cultural note: Be polite and precise
- Start with "Bonjour". Even a quick "Bonjour" before your question is appreciated.
- If someone gives you directions, listen, nod, and say "Merci" or "Merci beaucoup".
- In busy cities, people may speak fast. Don’t worry—ask them to repeat: "Vous pouvez répéter, s’il vous plaît ?" (Could you repeat, please?) At A1, you can also say: "Encore, s’il vous plaît" (Again, please).
Quick practice: Your turn
Try this short role-play out loud:
- You: Bonjour, excusez-moi. Je cherche la gare.
- Local: Bien sûr. Allez tout droit, puis tournez à droite.
- You: D’accord. C’est loin d’ici ?
- Local: Non, c’est près.
- You: Merci beaucoup !
Repeat with a different place: le musée, la pharmacie, l’hôpital, la poste.
Final booster
Keep these building blocks handy:
- Polite start: Bonjour. Excusez-moi, s’il vous plaît…
- Ask: Où est… ? / Je cherche… / Comment aller à/au/à la… ?
- Understand: à gauche, à droite, tout droit, au coin, devant, derrière, près de, loin
Practice a little each day. The next time you’re in a French-speaking place, you’ll feel confident asking for directions—and understanding the answer. Bon courage !
