¡Qué te pones hoy? Essential Spanish Clothes & Fashion Vocabulary (A1)
Getting dressed, shopping, complimenting someone’s outfit — fashion is everyday Spanish! In this A1 lesson, you’ll learn key clothing words, color adjectives, how to say what you’re wearing with llevar, and simple shop phrases. Practice as you go with quick exercises so these words stick.
Core clothing vocabulary
Start with the most common items. Notice the gender (el/la) and number (singular/plural).
Quick practice: articles and nouns
Choose the correct word to complete each sentence.
Llevo pantalones azules.
Busco una roja.
Necesito zapatos negros.
Colors and adjective agreement
In Spanish, color adjectives usually go after the noun and agree in gender and number.
- el vestido rojo (masc. singular)
- la falda roja (fem. singular)
- los pantalones rojos (masc. plural)
- las camisas rojas (fem. plural)
Some color adjectives don’t change gender: azul, verde, gris, rosa, naranja, beige. They still make plural: azul → azules; verde → verdes.
Saying what you’re wearing: llevar
Llevar means “to wear” or “to carry.” Use it to describe clothes you have on.
| Pronoun | Conjugation |
|---|---|
| yo | llevo |
| tú | llevas |
| él/ella/usted | lleva |
| nosotros/nosotras | llevamos |
| vosotros/vosotras | lleváis |
| ellos/ellas/ustedes | llevan |
Start with the time word
Subject first, then verb
Shopping phrases: sizes, fitting rooms, prices
Learn these essential words for stores.
Busco una chaqueta , talla M.
Para zapatos usamos el , no la talla.
Cultural and regional notes
- Words vary by region: vaqueros (Spain) vs. jeans (common in many countries). Suéter (LatAm) vs. jersey (Spain). Zapatillas (Spain) vs. tenis (LatAm) for sneakers.
- Sales seasons: In Spain, grandes rebajas usually happen in January and July. In many Latin American countries, ofertas and descuentos appear more irregularly.
- Styles and formality vary by city and climate. Listen for local terms and watch shop signs to learn regional vocabulary quickly.
Mini practice: describe your outfit
Try to write two sentences:
- Hoy llevo + item + color.
- En el trabajo llevo + item.
Example answers:
- Hoy llevo una falda azul.
- En el trabajo llevo un traje negro.
Say it out loud! Focus on noun + adjective order and agreement.
